Jameson Jacket

A 70s inspired jacket meant to encourage androgyny

Beyond Fashion Show

For The Beyond Fashion Show participants had to be inspired by the Vignelli clothing line that sits in the archives of RIT. The Vignellis were world renowned designers who have worked on everything from graphics to architecture to clothing.

Ideation

Drawing upon the time periods they worked in the 60s and 70s theres a lot of clothing meant to fit both genders. The way the Vignellis accomplished this was to make the pieces long and shapeless so it can fit a variety of different people. It ended up looking masculine and shapeless. I wanted to use this as inspiration for a jacket that inspired androgyny in a different way. Encouraging feminine silhouettes for all genders, like a jacket that comes in at the waist.

muslin pattern

Beginning with making a custom bodice patterns the next step was to transform the bodice into something that resembled a jacket. A thrifted denim jacket as the basis for this new pattern.

pattern making

The thrifted denim jacket pattern only went so far. In order to accomplish the desired design elements that curved around the arm scythe, patterning books were consulted. After several attempts in Muslin the curves were smooth enough to transfer into a heavier fabric.

Prototype

The heavier fabric showed the shape and structure of the jacket much better. Pockets were inset into the curves and a collar was attempted. It came out very large and was re-sized for the final. The length was shortened to be more cropped.
