Ideation
This paper prototype was deconstructed and made into the first pattern. I used the first pattern to make a muslin prototype. After this I continued to ideate in 3D forms.
Muslin Prototype
This material was too thin and it was difficult to see what the bag’s shape was. It needed a material with more structure.
First Real Fabric
Leftover Nylon happened to be a very bright orange. Using the more structured fabric it was easy to see the bag was too large. The pattern was sized down by 1.5 in.
Final
A closure on the front was added as well as a lapped zipper, and an interior pocket on the strap.
Exterior
Final bag exterior modeled on a 5’9” man and a 5’0” woman
Interior
The amount of storage was extremely important. The bag unzips for easy packing and cleaning, but can be unzipped halfway just like a regular backpack.
What was important is the division of space between the adult and the child. There are several spaces that are zippered and close to the body that the adult can keep their keys or wallet safe and away from curious hands.
